Upper Fifth Careers Programme

Autumn Term in the Careers Department started with the first in a regular series of Careers Talks presented to Upper 5th students. Girls had the opportunity to gain an insight into careers in Publishing, Medicine and Wealth Management. A case study exercise gave some girls the opportunity to consider the questions a client adviser in Wealth Management might ask, whilst other girls were given some very practical tips on self-publishing and seeing the broad range of careers that exist within publishing. Those interested in Medicine were given a two for one deal and heard about the working life of a GP and an anaesthetist.

The second round of Upper 5th careers talks saw students choosing to attend presentations on Mechanical Engineering, Marketing and Speech Therapy. Whilst these careers may appear to be poles apart, they all offered our girls an opportunity to gain a realistic insight from speakers who are extremely passionate about their field of work. Girls were able to see how a degree in Theatre Design led to a successful career in Marketing. It was also clear how broad and diverse a field it is. The Mechanical Engineering talk, whilst offering some insight into the world of academia, also demonstrated the practical application of the discipline in the field of prosthetics. The speech therapist showed girls how varied and rewarding this career is, whether practised in a hospital setting or within a school. We are extremely grateful to Old Girls, parents and local business contacts for inspiring our students.
